Despite putting up far more of a fight than many thought possible, the day will come when HDDs give way to SSDs - at least in the consumer space - because just look at the potential...
Unlike HDDs, SSD capacity isn't so much limited by technology as affordability with prices still skyrocketing even at relatively low sizes. But what if money was no option?
To this end BitMicro Networks has announced its 'E Disk Altima' line of money-is-no-object 3.5in SSDs with capacities up to 1.6 terabytes. What's (almost) more, the line operates at speeds of up to 4Gbps, delivering more than 55,000 I/O operating per second (IOPS) - for example, a Western Digital Raptor 150GB speed orientated HDD manages around 125 IOPS - with a sustained data rate of over 230MBps. Staggering, just staggering.
Keeping surprisingly calm about this was Rudy Bruce, BitMicro Executive VP for Marketing and Sales, who said "These upcoming E-Disk Altima solid state drive equipped with the latest in FC technology will benefit users who need to beef up their data recorders, scientific equipment and networked storage systems with the fastest, densest and most reliable solid state drives." Still refusing to jump up and down and high five team members, he added "The 4Gb FC 3.5-inch E-Disk Altima E3F4FL flash disk delivers high-speed, enterprise-class performance in rugged and compact form factors, ensuring unparalleled data processing capabilities even in extreme operating conditions."
He's sound bite heaven that guy.
Unfortunately, BitMicro didn't divulge the pricing of these enterprise focused wonder drives, but with an anticipated Q1/Q2 2008 release it is safe to say you don't have enough time to save up...
