Boston, the UK distributor, has unveiled a new range of high performance 1U rack-mount servers from Supermicro featuring dual hot-swap power supplies.
Previous 1U designs have offered backup for disks but still been at the mercy of the power supply, and if it went, the system died with it. The new offering now features dual hot-swappable 560W power supplies, so that if one dies the backup will take over. As they are hot-swappable, the faulty one can be replaced without having to switch off the server, ensuing maximum uptime.
The server supports the latest Intel Xeon 3.6GHz processors with EM64T, sporting an 800MHz front side bus and 1MB of Level 2 cache. Also present are six 184-pin DIMM sockets supporting up to 12GB of DDR333 memory or alternatively a massive 24GB of DDR266 memory.
The motherboard is based on Intel’s E7520 chipset and features four hot swappable SCA drive bays with an Adaptec 7902 two-channel Ultra320 SCSI controller. An optional ZCR RAID card is also available providing a low cost hardware RAID solution, without having to use up a PCI slot. The motherboard is available equipped with either an x8 PCI Express slot or one 64-bit 133MHz full height, full length PCIx slot.
A comprehensive suite of management tools, including IPMI 2.0, are available with the SuperMicro server to help ensure maximum system uptime and stability whilst foreseeing any potential problems. These can be used to do things such as sending an email alert to a system administrator.
