Much in the way iPod has come to describe all MP3 players, Blackberry is now commonly used when people talk about any mobile with a full keyboard and email functionality. That legend could be further expanded by the launch of the Pearl and T-Mobile has been wise enough to hop onboard straight away.
Possibly the company’s most consumer orientated handset to date, the Pearl 8100 (to provide its full name) has a remarkably conventional candy bar format and panders to the mainstream with the likes of a 1.3MP digital camera, audio and video playback and fashion phone-esque dimensions (107 x 50 x 14.5mm) topped off by a diddy weight (89.5g).
Aside from its tasteful styling the Pearl is pretty much a midrange model with 64MB of onboard memory, a microSD slot, 65k 240 x 260 resolution display and up to 3.5 hours of talktime. That said, it does possess the all conquering RIM trademarks: push email, full PIM functionality and corporate data access. The ‘rocker’ keyboard seen on the fantastic 7130g is also present.
As for T-Mobile’s part in all of this, it has brought the handset immediately into its range and enabled it for its web n’ walk tariff (currently, the best value data surfing package available at £7.50 for flat rate access). Available in October with prices ranging from £119.99 to free depending on price plan the Pearl looks set to convert a whole new generation of mobile mailers.
