Be Secure, I Command You

Now this is an interesting little device for those of you concerned about laptop security: a PC card with built in motion sensors which secures hard drive data and acts like a car alarm.

Dubbed the Caveo Anti-Theft (nice and literal), the product works simply by plugging into a standard PC card slot in your laptop. From here you can set a specified theft perimeter arming “car alarm style security” and immobilisation features via either the Windows taskbar or, intriguingly, using a special “Motion Password” series of physical movements.

I have to say the idea of waving my arms around in a Gandalf-esque manner in the middle of an airport executive lounge appeals to the kid in me and strikes me as rather entertaining and strangely magical. That said, it is nothing compared to the shock some poor sod is going to get if he gets too close (the alarm can be set up to 110db!). The potential for booby trapping your friends also has unlimited potential (perhaps I have just seen too much Jack Ass).

More seriously, the Caveo Anti-Theft is more than just a proximity alarm as it also incorporates an encryption layer which claims to make the laptop completely inaccessible. Should your laptop be stolen and recovered, a robust master code is required to regain access to the operating system. And yes, once set, it makes no difference if a thief pulls your Anti-Theft PC card out of the machine or not: the laptop is locked down.

To be honest, with total laptop theft hitting $6.7m last year according to a CSI/FBI Computer Crime and Security Survey and more than 5,000 laptops lost in the back of cabs in the last six months, I can think of worse products to bring to market. Priced at £89.99 including VAT, the Caveo Anti-Theft is available (solely) from Halcyonics UK now.
