Consequently, backing its reputation as the world's most progressive broadcaster, the Beeb is set to extend the functionality seen in its groundbreaking iPlayer by streaming the whole of BBC1 live online next year. Auntie has already put BBC3 and BBC News online as trials, but now it's the turn of its flagship channel.

'Building on the success of the iPlayer, we want to develop bbc.co.uk to include a broad range of the BBC's broadcast content, as well as new and interactive forms of media that enable audiences to interact with and contribute to the website,' said Mark Thompson, BBC Director General.

In related news, ITV has confirmed it is now ready to start broadcasting its High Definition service on Saturday evening at 7.45pm. It's first programme with be live coverage of the Portugal v Turkey match at Euro 2008 and with BBC HD already up and running the whole of the Euros will be available in High Def either through Sky HD or FreeSat HD.

Interestingly, 'Foxsat-HD' is currently the only High Definition-ready FreeSat box on the market so it should expect sales to soar. Sometimes good things come to those who don't wait...
