Virgin Media really does look to have adopted a good news/bad news/good news policy. Last week it announced it was implementing new traffic shaping measures and now we have the announcement that the BBC's iPlayer is finally available to the three and a half million or so Virgin Media subscribers currently resident in the UK.
At the moment, content is delivered on-demand in an MPEG-2 stream that is supposedly of a better quality than those available to the PC client. In the future there is also the possibility of adding HD content to the mix, which would definitely make a compelling addition to Virgin's service!
The BBC claims that over 350-hours of the last seven days is available through the iPlayer, which can hardly be called stingy. As well as the TV offerings available, the BBC also plans to add radio streams to Virgin Media in due course.
So, anyone willing to place a bet on which platform will see an iPlayer client next?
