If you cast your mind back to October (in the tech world I know that's hard) then you may remember a funky Asus mobo technology dubbed Splashtop. If not, I'll refresh your memory - but the big news is it has just hit the company's laptops…

Ok, flashback time. Splashtop - also sometimes referred to as 'Instant Boot' - is a light-weight Linux OS developed by DeviceWM which was embedded first into the Asus P5E3 Deluxe motherboard to enable virtually instant access to basic functionality such as web browsing, VoIP calls, emailing and multimedia playback. Arguably of course, this fast access technology was always far more suited to laptops and now that is where it will be found.

From June Asus will begin dropping Splashtop into a selection of its machines, where it will be rebranded 'Express Gate' (yup, lots of aliases) and users will be given the option to load it when they start their machines. If selected, boot time for the speedy OS is expected to be less than five seconds and comes with the dual benefit of battery savings when compared to the bulky Windows Vista.

"ASUS is always committed to bring customers the most innovative solutions," said Henry Yeh, ASUS Notebook General Manager. "With Express Gate, users will experience a new, fast, and secure way to surf, chat and play on ASUS notebooks for a new computing experience"

The 'M70T', 'M50V' and 'M51T' multimedia series and the 'F8Va' and 'VR' lines of notebooks will be the primary recipients of Express Gate with others to follow if it proves a big hit. Given rival solutions such as HyperSpace are already being prepared, I'd think it's safe to say it will be…
