Asus Eee PC 1008HA Hits Pre-Order

Update: Click here for our full review of the Asus Eee PC 1008HA

Asus' Eee PC 1008HA is doing a fantastic job of pushing the boundaries of what can be called a netbook. Having turned up for pre-order at Amazon and Laptops Direct nudging up against the £400 mark, it's not exactly a cheap system which is rather against the original netbook ethos. But it does look pretty.

The S101 nearly justified its asking price at around £450 and if you ask me the 1008HA has the advantage on when it comes to styling. The 1.1kg, 1in thick system is available in Blue, Red and White - I think the latter is clearly the colour of choice.

Specs are admittedly less impressive, with an eminently unexciting 1.6GHz Intel Atom N280 CPU, 1GB of RAM and a 1,024 x 600 pixel 10in display. Windows XP and a 160GB hard drive, in addition to Bluetooth, Ethernet and Wi-Fi connectivity will surprise no-one.

Nonetheless, if you're looking to stick two fingers up to the recession, fancy a netbook and aesthetics are a consideration, this could be the netbook for you.

Well, it certainly does the job of "make an existing computer small and excessively priced" as well as fruit-themed brands.

Seeing as XP is allegedly coming to the end of its "life", I find it staggering that you can still buy new machines with it pre-installed.

Same old stuff. A triumph of style over substance.

.....and &#163450? ....... I nearly wet myself laughing.

The only reason to buy a laptop which doesn't have enough power to run Vista is because it's stupidly cheap, portable and has a good battery life. Asus are messing with that formula and considering many people are going to hold out for Windows7, or see what Apple have to offer.... this thing isn't going to sell.

XP's product support lifetime doesn't end until 2014. It's just ending the lifespan in which it can be sold.

I can't work out if I'd rather have a macbook air, or 4 of these.
