Archos Takes Fight To AppleTV

Following a disappointing feature set and even more disappointing sales, it isn't too hard to kick sand in the face of Apple TV. Philips has done it and now it's Archos' turn.

The company is planning to unveil the 'Archos TV+' at - yes, you guessed it - CES next week. It is a 250GB DVR (digital video recorder) with integrated WiFi and Ethernet which is capable of not only streaming video, audio and photos from PC to TV but also recording directly from the television and squashing in some rather nifty PC-centric features of its own.

For a start, the Archos TV can browse the web thanks to its installation of Opera, has a versatile remote control with full Qwerty keyboard and has the ability to stream content directly from its Generation 3, 4 and 5 series of players. A USB 2.0 port also allows additional storage/media to be plugged in directly and while HD capabilities were not touched upon, it does come with HDMI, S-Video and Component connectivity.

A reasonable $349.99 asking price has been mooted too with a lower capacity 80GB version retailing for just $249.99 (both a vast improvement on Apple TV's 40GB HDD and £200 RRP).

Time for that line again: further details will be revealed at CES...
