Approval Finally Given To .xxx Domain

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has finally given the go ahead for the creation of the top level domain suffix, .xxx, for the pornographic industry.

Proposals to have such a domain name created has been on-going for over a decade years and as far back as 2005 there was initial approval for the .xxx domain name. This was later rescinded however following complaints from conservative political groups but today, ICANN has given final approval for its creation. The .xxx designation will only be given to the "adult entertainment industry" and will be regulated by the International Foundation for Online Responsibility (IFFOR). It will be regulated in relation to keeping the sites virus-free and upholding the owners' rights under the United Nations' Declaration of Human Rights rather than in relation to content.

“The ICANN community has engaged in extensive debate as well, with this single issue generating higher volumes of community comment than nearly any other issue ever faced within ICANN," a statement from ICANN read in a draft paper ahead of the final approval. The issue, as you would expect, has created a lot of debate both online and offline. Some people claim the .xxx designation will help better filter inappropriate content while others, such as religious groups, claim it is legitimising the pornographic industry – but with it being a multi-billion pound industry globally, that argument seems pretty dated.

ICANN will shortly sign an agreement with ICM Registry, which is backing the domain, to begin the roll out of the .xxx addresses. ICM has said it already has over 300,000 pre-registrations for .xxx domains.
