It has taken Apple almost a year to update its current range of iPods, but it did just that last night and the results were, well… disappointing.
First up we were presented with the new iPod (video) which was easily the biggest let down of the night. Virtually identical to the existing 5G, improvements – excluding a 60 per cent brighter screen - were all largely on the inside.
While the 30GB version remains, a new 80GB flagship was announced and consequently video battery life has increased to 3.5 hours and 6.5 hours respectively. Battery life playing music is still a distinctly average 14 hours on the 30GB and 20 hours on the 80GB. Software also gets a re-jig with gapless playback, text based search and brightness controls added while a new range of games – including Pac Man, Tetris, Mahjong and Mini Gold – have been made available for £4.50 a pop.
Dimensions and weights remain the same, but the two models have at least seen their prices cut to £189 and £259. Not really the touch screen revolution we were all expecting. Ultimately, after one of the longest product cycles in the iPod’s history, what we have got basically amounts to a software refurb…
I suspect many of competitors will see this latest generation as a major opportunity to haul back market share.
