Apple Unveils 17in MacBook Pro

In a list of shocks to compare with Chelsea winning the league title, Lost getting renewed for a second season and Tom Cruise not only giving his baby a stupid name but misinterpreting it too, the MacBook Pro line has received a 17in addition.

The obvious standout feature here is the sizeable screen which Apple claims is 36 per cent brighter than the previous equivalent PowerBook and it packs a decent (if not 1080p compliant) resolution of 1680 x 1050. A 2.16GHz Intel Core Duo CPU provides its beating heart and 1GB of DDR2 RAM comes as standard along with a 120GB 5,400RPM HDD and 8x dual layer DVD rewriter. Onboard graphics come courtesy of an ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 GPU with a choice of either 128MB or 256MB of GDDR3 memory.

Further kicking sand into the eyes of Averatec’s (now bubblery) 17in 3.2Kg laptop, the new MacBook Pro tips the scales as a marginally more manageable 3.1Kg and cuts a reasonably svelt figure with measurements of 392 x 265 x 25.9mm. WifFi, Bluetooth, USB2.0, FireWire and Express Card slots coupled with a built in iSight Camera and DVI and VGA video outputs means this gentle giant can buddy up with just about any device you’d care to throw at it (though placing it gently alongside is probably wiser).

Prices start from just £1,999 including VAT but – as we all know - you’ll soon be able to bulk that up if you tinker with the basic specs. Apple is claiming this hefty momma performs up to 5x faster than the previous PowerBook G4 and I’m sure there will be some exceptionally obscure test somewhere that can back this up. Like everything Apple ever announces, it’s out immediamentialialially.
