Apple Mac App Store Opens On 6 January

We first heard about the Mac App Store back in October at the same time as Steve Jobs revealed details of MacOS X Lion. At the time he promised the Mac App Store would launch within 90 days – and he wasn’t lying.

Today, 78 days after Jobs made this prediction, Apple has announced that the Mac App Store will go live in 90 countries around the world on 6 January. It will feature paid and free apps in categories like Education, Games, Graphics and Design, Lifestyle, Productivity and Utilities. These can be purchased through your iTunes account similar to the App Store in iOS.

Amazingly, Jobs had something quite positive to say about Apple's latest development. Surprising that. “The App Store revolutionized mobile apps. We hope to do the same for PC apps with the Mac App Store by making finding and buying PC apps easy and fun. We can’t wait to get started on January 6.” Like on iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, you can purchase, download and install apps in just one click and start using them immediately. Purchased apps can run on all of your personal Macs and updates are delivered directly through the Mac App Store. The Mac App Store is available to Mac OS X Snow Leopard users as a free download through Software Update.
