It has taken a full three weeks for Apple to own up to the eight core Mac Pro that it 'accidentally' leaked in mid-March and while Intel may not be pleased by the news, we sure are.
Why would the chip giant not be pulling a smiley face? The pairing of two unannounced Intel Xeon quad core 'Woodcrest' 3GHz processors – oops! Other than that however much is as expected with the option of two slower quad core 'Clovertown' 3GHz processors and mammoth potential of up to 16GB of fully buffered 667MHz DDR2 RAM, 3TB of storage and a selection of nVidia graphics.
It doesn't all have to be ground breaking stuff though, for $2,499 a Mac Pro with two 2.66GHx Woodcrest CPUs, 1GB RAM, an nVidia GeForce 7300GT, 250GB HDD and 16x double layer SuperDrive can be all yours. Still, I'm sure we'd all still prefer the HAL-challenger...
Ironically, despite the eight corer first breaking cover on the Apple UK site the official announcement has so far only been unveiled on the fat old '.com'. Never mind, give it a week or so and I have no doubt a eight core Mac Pro can be purring away in our offices, post hefty English Tax n all.
