No better way to introduce this than...
Yes indeed people Apple is finally looking to do some major overhauling of its 'iPhone OS' (previously known as mobile OS X) with the bold announcement of version 3.0. Web speculation has already gone into overdrive with many wild guesses but let's pick out a few of the most pertinent issues:
- Multi-tasking/Push notifications
- Video recording
- Turn by turn GPS directions
- Native Gmail contacts & calendar support
- Crippled Bluetooth
- Mobile Safari HTML 5 compatibility
- and of course: copy & paste
Apple will be showing off the new software on 17 March describing it as an "advance preview of what we're building" so I suspect this is to hold off potential deserters to the Palm Pre or Magic. A final launch is likely to be co-ordinated with the unveiling of a third generation iPhone in June/July.
Given the competition has sizeably stepped up their game in the last 12 months however, the big question is whether the changes to both software and hardware will be enough...
In related news Google has this week rolled out a more mobile friendly version of Image Search for both Android and the iPhone OS. It will detect the platforms and appear automatically with simple shortcuts to filter content results. Nifty.
