Apacer Latest To Make nano Challenger

The battle to make a nano beater has already been won but that doesn’t mean everyone else about to give up anytime soon. It’s back to the drawing board for this latest model from Apacer though…

On the surface the AU822 is a perfectly nice (if heavily Toshiba Gigabeat influenced) little player. It sports a nice 1.5in 65k LCD, measures just 90 x 40 x 7.8mm and weighs a teeny 43.7g. Sadly compromises have been made…

The biggest one is a shameful five hours of music playback battery life. No player has been this low since, well… I’m not sure when? Scarily this figure is quoted as a ‘Maximum’ so I hate to think what it could drop to given a little menu surfing. Capacities aren’t great either at just 256MB, 512MB or 1GB (we’re in the days on 4/6GB boys) while format support (MP3 and WMA) isn’t particularly expansive either (when will companies wake up to Ogg?).

An integrated FM tuner turns up a little too late in proceedings to save proceedings, as does a voice recorder and limited video (AMV), photo (Jpeg) and text (txt) support. Besides, anyone dare to guess what the unspecified video life might be?! There is support for both Windows (98 onwards) and Mac (OS 10 or later) but this ship has already sailed.

So Apacer, it looks good but these days we require far more than superficial beauty. Hang on. Did I – Gordon Kelly – just say that…?
