Android Overload: Motorola Unveils Devour, HTC Incredible Leaks

The future for Android seems to be getting brighter and brighter...

Two new handsets for Google's ever more popular smartphone OS have been outed over the weekend in very different ways. Firstly Motorola chose to go the official (and expensive) route by announcing the 'Devour' during the commercials for the Super Bowl - one of many talking points during the game, the first being this. Secondly is a leak for the HTC 'Incredible' - another Nexus One challenger/variant.

The Devour first and, in effect, what we have is a baby brother to the Motorola Droid (dubbed the Milestone in Europe). Like the Droid, the Devour has a slide out Qwerty keyboard - though specs are cut down with a 3.1in 320 x 480 display and 3MP camera the main compromises. Elsewhere you'll still find HSDPA, WiFi, GPS and a bundled 8GB microSD card, plus Motorola's custom MotoBLUR interface. I'm not a great fan of this UI though, since it delays Android firmware updates (the Devour will ship with the ageing v1.6).

Still, the Super Bowl ad does feature Megan Fox - so I'm feeling in a 'lenient' mood.

As for the HTC Incredible - silly/warranty threatening name apart - this is far more high-end and is very much in the (increasingly popular) Nexus One mould. Consequently, what is reported are the familiar specs of a 3.5-3.7in WVGA AMOLED display, 5MP camera with dual LED flash, 1GHz Snapdragon processor and Android v2.1. Other niceties include HSDPA, WiFi and GPS - though there's no word on the internal memory (fingers crossed it avoids the usual trap of virtually nothing onboard + a microSD card).

There's no word about UK/European availability for either of these two, but I'd expect details to firm up at next week's Mobile World Congress.

I love the way those HTC Inredible shots have an 'HTC confidential' watermark emblazoned across the screen. Usually anyone who leaks these shots blurs that text so they can't be identified and subsequently sued by HTC.

If these rumours pan out though, this would be my ideal phone.

The Milestone is a superb handset, but Motorola are incredibly slow at getting out firmware updates. The Milestone is a Google Experience device so it should get things quicker but it hasn't. They make good devices but be wary of their updating.

Think they got the Incredible naming spot on. May have to sell my Hero for this one.

Good to see Android devices being marketed well!
