Amazon has announced a reading format called Kindle Singles. These are short-form pieces of literature that will Amazon describes as containing between 10,000 and 30,000 words, which will generally be between 30 and 90 pages.
The company describes them as being, “twice the length of a New Yorker feature or as much as a few chapters of a typical book.” It also said that this was, “the perfect, natural length to lay out a single killer idea, well researched, well-argued and well-illustrated - whether it's a business lesson, a political point of view, a scientific argument, or a beautifully crafted essay on a current event.
Essentially these are Digital Pamphlets, a modern day version of the printed booklets that have been used throughout the ages to promote just the sorts of ideas Amazon describes.
Kindle Singles will have their own section on the Kindle Store and will be priced less than full books. Exact pricing has not yet been revealed however but they will be able to be downloaded and read on the Kindle and any device that offers the Kindle software.
The Kindle Singles format could prove a fantastic opportunity for authors who simply don’t have time, or don’t want to write a whole book, as the Singles can be self-published using the Kindle Digital Text Platform.
