Try not to get too excited, but Acer has done the unthinkable and updated its range of 16:9 laptops, dubbed Gemstone Blue, to Intel's Centrino 2 platform. This brings with it new CPUs, a new chipset, new wireless modules and also updated graphics, with the new machines utilising nVidia's 9-Series GPUs to replace the 8-Series.

Interestingly, though, the new machines will be, if retail models are faithful to the information we've been given, among the first notebooks to utilise 1,066 MHz DDR3 memory instead of the DDR2 memory we've become accustomed to.

So, the new 16in will now be known as the 6935G {pictured above}. Based on the PM45 chipset, it'll have the 2.8GHz T9600 Core 2 Duo at the top of the range, with other models shipping with a 2.0GHz P7350, 2.26GHz P8400 or a 2.4GHz P8600. As noted above it'll use DDR3 memory but only in amounts "up to 2GB", though naturally it will be upgradeable to 4GB. Graphics will be supplied by nVidia 9600M GTs with 512MB dedicated RAM and hard drive capacities will max out at 320GB.

As before Blu-ray drives will come as standard on all but the cheapest models, as will a Full HD 1,920 x 1,080 display and Dolby Home Theatre audio.

Meanwhile the 18.4 inch offering, the 8930G {above}, will bring with it similar CPU options, but add a options for an nVidia 9700M GT and dual hard drives.

UK pricing and availability has yet to be revealed, but you can expect to see these new models before Christmas.
