When Acer bought E-TEN in March many thought it would simply start chucking out the Taiwanese company's products with a different label ASAP. Instead it will be almost one full year by the time the first handset arrives so are expectations are rising...

Yep, Acer company chairman JT (no giggles) Wang has today gotten 10 kinds of official on the idea stating the first company smartphone(s?) will appear in Q1 2009. Naturally JT didn't give away anything particularly tempting about the phones themselves, but did say the corporate giant was in negotiations with telcos worldwide.

This is a rather interesting statement because while E-TEN had consistently produced innovative devices (including the first models to sport VGA screens and integrated GPS) it's relatively small size meant it got three fifths of four tens of nowhere with international operators. Consequently it was unable to sell phones with any form of contract subsidy, sales were hindered and Acer swooped...

It is all change now however as Acer is a $150 billion dollar monster who bought the likes of Gateway and Packard Bell with loose change and it appears we will have a major new player in this skyrocketing arena rather soon. As for the E-TEN brand, it will be repositioned towards real time stock tracking devices - it's original claim to fame.

So Acer smartphones - are we excited? Yes indeedy...
