It’s tough at the top. nVidia is about to… well just wait a few more hours, and today stock rolls in of the fastest video card in ATI’s history.
Previewed by Riyad last month, the X1800 XT is the latest flagship graphics card from those crazy Canadians and it’s on the streets now. Features include a radically new ultra-threaded 3D architecture and the company’s Avivo video and display technology platform. The numbers behind the chip are impressive with 16 pixel pipelines, DirectX 9 Shader Model 3.0 support, a core running at 625MHz and up to half a gig of GDDR3 clocked at 750MHz (1.5GHz effective).
Naturally, the X1800 XT is compatible with ATI’s somewhat maligned CrossFire technology and though online e-tailers have been listing these cards for a few weeks most promise stock will actually arrive today. As with all reference cards a veritable landslide of familiar faces have rolled out to declare their support with PowerColour seemingly the first out of the traps according to a number of stockists.
Prices vary – depending on overclocking and bundles – ranging from £370 to £450, so you’ll have to decide if those extra few frames per second are worth a little more of your hard earned cash (let’s face it, if you’re spending this much on a graphics card it probably is!). Of course with IT being such an uncompetitive, easy going industry I can’t imagine nVidia putting out any kind of response to this card No Way Jose; and even if it did, it certainly, most definitely, absolutely would not be doing it today… ;)
