AMD's HD 2900 Pro Gets An Official Launch

Its nice when we can back up up the rumblings we hear from the rumour mill. The most recent rumours of particular interest have related to the romise of a lower specification and thus lower priced string to AMD's graphics bow arriving, under the guise of the AMD HD 2900 Pro.

Considering nVidia has been (rightly) claiming ownership of the 'World's fastest graphics card' for nigh on a year now, while the AMD HD 2900 XT has had to settle for competing with the rather lower powered 8800 GTS 640MB, all on its own, it seems strange that a new addition to the line-up would make it out of the doors with so little hurrah.

The vital statistics are the same as the HD 2900 XT, the difference simply being lower clock speed. Thus, the same 320 stream processors are on board, the core is clocked at 600MHz (down from 742MHz on the XT) and a choice of 512MB 1GB of memory, clocked at 800MHz.

Oddly, the 1GB variant of the card will come not only with a 90mm heatsink, as with the current range of cards, but also with the option of a 120mm heatsink - although that would likely be reserved for OEMs. Price-wise, the 512MB version of the card is set to retail here for around £170 while the 1GB flavour will set you back just over £200.
