AMD Geode LX: 1 Watt Windows

AMD has expanded its Geode line of processors with its fastest and most power efficient model to date, the LX.

Aimed at Tablet PCs, thin clients, high definition TVs, set top boxes, personal video recorders, ad infinitum the LX is quite a piece of work. It runs at a creditable 500MHz, has support for a DDR interface and USB2.0 and requires less than one watt of power.

Full title the Geode LX 800@0.9W, the x86 based chip can actually run Windows XP and XP Embedded operating systems and works without a fan. “{The aim} is to bring traditional PC-type functionality and capabilities to small, full-feature products” the company said in a statement.

The ”800” in the processor name comes from the fact that AMD claims the chip can provide the equivalent performance of an 800MHz processor from Via Technologies (easy Tiger). Overall power consumption for a full system built around an LX is purported to be as low as 2.1 watts. 2D graphics and built-in encryption are also part of the LX’s armoury, while a separate 3D chip can be added if necessary.

Price is based on the usual high volume shipping, so if you can afford to buy 10,000 at once you’ll be pleased to know you can get an LX for just $45 a pop. Sounds like AMD’s onto a winner with this one to me. It’ll be interesting to see how Intel responds since its XScale processors adopt a completely different approach, dropping x86 in favour ARM architecture.

Have the two companies finally found a sandpit where they can play happily together? Probably not.
