AMD Cranks Mobile Athlons To 4000+

If you are a fan of wailing on your buddies’ full size gaming rigs with your altogether more sophisticated desktop replacement notebook, then you might just be looking at a new machine now AMD has turned up the speed of its Mobile Athlons to 4000+

Running at 2.6GHz and containing 1MB of L2 cache, the 64bit 4000+ should help provide those extra frames per second the hardcore element is looking for. It supports Windows XP’s Enhanced Virus Protection system and, just as importantly, should soon knock down the prices on the rest of the range.

For a flagship chip, prices of $382 (when purchased in those infamous quantities of 1,000), mean the consumer cost for a new latest and greatest notebook shouldn’t increase too much.

Slightly less exciting, but no less relevant, are three new Mobile Sempron chips. A new desktop replacement 3300+ processor with 128KB of cache is clocked at 2GHz and will set bulk buyers back just $125 dollars. For slim and light machines there are 3100+ (256KB cache) and 3300+ (128KB cache) editions priced at $107 and $134 respectively. The former is clocked at 1.8GHz, the latter 2GHz. ENV protection is also supported.

As CPU makers are prone to say, all the new processors are available immediately. So expect them to start turning up in machines faster than you can say “fabrication”. Ok, maybe not that fast…
