802.11n Spec Products On Way From Netgear

A lot of products arrive before the public really wants them: DVB-T, 3G and some would even argue High Definition. Yet there’s one standard the world has been crying out for which has driven us potty with delay after delay after delay and finally Netgear has had enough.

The networking guru has announced that it will begin selling 802.11n ‘draft specification’ products. This is essentially the 99.99 per cent finished standard for next generation wireless technology which keeps being delayed by men with white beards who make decisions at speeds Ents would find irritating.

The result may still mean a ‘Pre-N’ official label but the results should be electrifying with vastly increased stability, security, range and speed with theoretical data rates of up to 600Mbps using spatial multiplexing MIMO technology. No, I don’t know how it works exactly either, but I want it.

Netgear is trying not to ruffle any feathers with this announcement and, as an active member of both the IEEE and WiFi Alliance, says the move is ‘promoting the industry need for multi-vendor interoperability at the new higher speeds and for maintaining reliable backwards-compatibility with existing wireless products’. In other words: We’re Not Waiting Any Longer…

No draft specification products were announced by Netgear at this time, but it promises to be showing them off at CeBIT and we, as ever, will be there…
