London-based music download service, 7digital, is celebrating passing the one million
active user mark but is hoping that by next year its apps will be pre-installed
on more than 20 million devices.
Over the past year, 7digital has shown strong growth on the
back of a number of innovations, including making FLAC-quality downloads available and partnering with BlackBerry and Android
smartphone and tablet manufacturers.
The growth in 7digital’s popularity has been driven by it
mobile apps as well as its partnerships with device manufacturers. Over 20 per
cent of 7digital’s digital sales now come direct from devices with the apps
7digital has partnerships with manufacturers such as
Samsung, RIM, Sony Ericsson, Philips and Toshiba. The most popular device with
the app pre-installed is the Samsung Galaxy S II.
7digital also partnered with RIM to put its Music Store on the
BlackBerry PlayBook, though with the rather disappointing sales of this tablet
to date, it may not have been the best partnerships for the UK company.
CEO of 7digital, said: “It’s great to see such strong growth for our apps and API
partners via smartphones, tablets and other devices. Sales to devices were less
than 5 per cent of our sales in 2010 and are now over 20 per cent and growing
