It was just yesterday that I wished Apple would get back to focusing on the iPod and sure enough today we have the first rumour (in a very long time) about next gen models.
Despite all chances being this is nonsense today's web chat intrigues me because it goes into specifics, namely:
*Wintek, a former Apple iPod supplier back in the monochrome days, has landed a deal to supply the touchscreens (it was always going to be touchscreens) for the new models.
*The touchscreens themselves will be capacitive without accompanying software or integrated circuits so they can be integrated into an iPhone influenced model.
*Mass shipments have already begun and Apple is targeting a speedy August release which would put the product on the market just two months before the iPhone.
Interestingly Wintek has also refused to comment on these rumours but it claims it adopts this approach to maintain customer privacy – make of that what you will.
From a personal perspective the rumours certainly aren't unreasonable, even if an August release date does seem too soon (in relation to the iPhone, not the age old 5.5G iPods). True or not however one interesting aspect to any new models will be their approach to storage. A capacious moving parts hard drive would certainly separate it from the iPhone, but a large – say 16GB – flash drive would surely get the punters rolling in.
Either way we just want to know... and if you're planning to buy a 5.5G iPod at the moment – don't.
Note Now we have iPod rumours hasn't the European iPhone network tussle gone quiet...? *Hint, hint*
