This box of tricks was initially spotted at the end of last month but now Nokia has gotten all official on us.

The Nokia 'N82' is a candybar powerhouse with a stand-out five megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens, autofocus and a Xenon flash. Equally eye catching is the integrated GPS chip, WiFi, HSDPA (though 2100MHz only so no US high-speed jinks) and relatively sizeable 2.4in QVGA screen.

Being multimedia-centric too, the N82 learns the very important (yet regularly ignored) lesson that a 3.5mm earphone jack is essential and adds to its audio and video playback abilities with an FM tuner and a microSD slot for bulking up storage capacity.

Like all Nokia's latest handsets, the N82 is also fully compatible with the company's Ovi platform which provides access to an online music store, Nokia maps and its gaming service which goes under the old N-Gage brand.

On the downside, despite many, many official press photographs from odd angles with exciting on-screen goings-on (I ignored those), it is impossible to escape the fact that the N82 is ugly... like U.G.L.Y. It copies the horrible buttons on the Sony Ericsson W880i (the worst part of that handset), looks somehow unbalanced, strangely twinned to Herman Munster and as if it would be good for clubbing muggers over the head. That said, it's a Nokia and try as it might, design has never been its strong point.

On the other hand, if you're a practical person and a well featured, powerful, relatively portable (114g) handset is on your Chrimbo shopping list, then you should start nagging Santa about this ASAP.

Update 18.03.08: It's now also available in a far more attractive, though still Herman Munstery black. Ta Dah!
