We all knew Apple’s iPad line was successful. Of course there were tablets before it, but with the runaway success of its first model Apple changed the market, creating a burgeoning new category that’s challenging the laptop and even desktop PC markets virtually overnight. Just how successful have the iPad and iPad 2 been so far? Well, tonight Apple revealed it had sold a staggering 55 million units so far.

In the last quarter of 2011 alone, 15.4 million iPad 2s were sold. Apparently that outstrips PC sales from any single manufacturer for the same period – but, the wording is important here: from any single manufacturer, in a sector where there’s more competition than any other. Compare that to the tablet market, where quality iPad rivals like the Transformer Prime are only just starting to emerge.

However, while it’s clear the PC (laptop or desktop) isn’t yet under as much threat as Apple might like you to think, the iPad is clearly here to stay, and with the new iPad 3 those figures are only likely to grow. What about you? Will you be adding to those figures now that the latest iPad has finally been revealed? Let us know in our poll or the comments below.
