500MB/sec Targetted For Next Gen SSDs

Think an SSD upgrade is looking ever more tempting? Just look what is in the pipeline...

Following up its stunning news last week the ever more talkative Inidilinx has now laid out a remarkable roadmap for its third generation SDDs and beyond with claims that speeds of - wait for it - 500 megabytes per second are only the beginning.

Indilinx - in conjunction with Mosaid - is firstly looking at 'Jet Stream' a third generation SSD project which will look to capitalise on the SATA3 interface to hit its lofty goal. Beyond this things get even crazier with 'Hillview'. Targetting SSDs designed for server platforms, Hillview aims to achieve 1400MB per second! Lastly - and no doubt far into the future - 'Niagara' is a software streaming server solution which aims to manage a sci-fi-ish 10Gbps.

Is Indilinx living in Magic Fairy Land? Certainly this is something it will have to work jolly hard to disprove...

One thing is for certain however and that is while HDDs have struggled to significantly raise storage capacities (particularly in the 1.8in and 2.5in form factors) and performance in recent years SSD looks set for exponential improvements far into the future. So let's pray long and hard that prices continue to reduce at the same rates.
