New, 3rd-gen Nest Learning Thermostat has 40% larger screen

Nest has quietly unveiled the 3rd-generation Nest Learning Thermostat, though it’s largely a cosmetic change rather than an essential upgrade.

The key feature of the new thermostat is the 40% larger screen, which is also sharper – it now has 229 pixels per inch, which is more than sharp enough for something you don’t look too closely at.

Indeed, that’s kind of the point of the new version. Nest has designed it be easier to view from across the room. The the marketing bods at Nest have dubbed this “Farsight” – not to be confused with cult classic TV series, Farscape.

The motion sensor now detects movement from further away and when it does the new screen will light up to show the time or temperature. It’s kind of like a digital wall clock.

At this point things get a bit vague. Nest says the new version has more temperature sensors, making it “more accurate”. It also claims it’s better at learning your habits, but doesn’t get into why or how.

Basically, the new 3rd-en Nest Learning Thermostat is a bigger, thinner and tweaked version of the current one. Current owners probably don’t need to upgrade, and this new version probably won’t convince anyone who wasn’t sure about it before.

Still, the new one is available to buy in the US for $249 – UK and European release date and pricing are yet to be confirmed.
