Now this is more like it – it’s Samsung’s “World’s…” (insert choice of lightest/thinnest/fastest/bestestest here).
Right off the bat we have to mention the F520 (top) and F510 (middle), the little brothers of the stonking F700 iPhone killer that I previewed last week.
Like the F700 the F520 has a horizontally sliding Qwerty thumb board but unlike the F700 it also slides vertically to reveal a keypad and direction wheel. A 3in 480 x 272 touch screen still makes it inside and there’s HSDPA, a 3MP camera, A2DP support and a microSD expansion slot. At this stage little else is known about what Samsung has managed to stuff into the F520’s 104.8 x 53.7 x 17.4mm frame but I have a feeling it’s all good. As you might expect for something so tasty there’s no release yet.
Right behind the F520 is the F510/F500 (confusing since Samsung refers to it using both codes). Less mobile office and more multimedia fun toy this schizophrenic handset has dual LCD faces – one side to make phone calls and the other boasting a large screen and dedicated multimedia controls. There’s a 2.4in widescreen display which should be large enough to do some justice to the supported Mpeg4, H.264, WMV and AVI file formats. Meanwhile a chunky 410MB of internal memory is packed in and a microSD slot can expand upon that while a 2MP camera finishes things off.
Last in the sexy new range is the F300 (above), a handset Samsung dubs the ‘Ultra Music Phone’. Like the F500 (in fact virtually identical on the outside) it has dual LCD screens, dedicated music and keypad interfaces and also boasts an FM radio and 100MB of onboard memory. In addition, a ‘Quick PC Sync’ function allows users to create a music library and customised play lists. A 2MP camera naturally makes an appearance too.
Samsung wouldn’t tell us release dates for any of these tasty morsels but it has done us the good deed of kicking starting our 3GSM salivation glands.
