Whatever other networks fear 3 seems to embrace...
3 has been doing a lot of things right recently, and this is another one…
Today sees the launch of the company’s ‘Skypephone’ – a handset with fully integrated Skype client (think like this not this) and 3G connectivity. The best part however: all Skype to Skype calls will be completely free as long as a customer has either a monthly contract or PAYG in credit.
“Skype is now truly mobile. This new handset is incredibly easy to use and lets you make free mobile Skype calls when you are on the move to other Skype users all over the world no matter where they are,” said acting Skype CEO Michael van Swaaij “It couldn’t be simpler put Skype in your pocket and make free Skype mobile calls and send free Skype instant messages at the touch of a single Skype button.”
Kevin Russell, CEO, 3 UK, naturally concurred: “3 wants to make the mobile internet available to everyone. To do this, we believe that services need to be simple to access and affordable. Communication is the prime function of the mobile today.”
The attitude adopted by 3 currently is a genuine breath of fresh air and a stark contrast to the reactionary approach of most networks. Furthermore, should the Skypephone appeal (and to regular international callers it surely must) the handset will cost just £49.99 on PAYG and will be free on any monthly contract. The service will also arrive this year in Australia, Austria, Denmark, Hong Kong, Italy, Ireland, Macau and Sweden.
Skypers/Skypees/Skypists/Skypettes what are you waiting for…?
