3 Launches £9 Monthly Contract

Still scared of monthly contracts?

Setting something of a precedent this week is 3 which has launched the UK's first single digit mobile phone contract and it isn't bad value either...

Dubbed 'Mix & Match 100' the tariff costs just £9pm and still delivers a rather healthy 100 cross network minutes or 100 texts and 300 3 to 3 calls each month plus free voicemail, Windows Live Messenger and Skype access. As an added bonus a 3G Sony Ericsson K660i (pictured) in black, silver, white or lime green (!) will be thrown in completely free. The snag - depending on how contract phobic you are: an 18 month commitment.

"Delivering value to consumers has always been a priority, that's why we're the first and only mobile network to try to take the worry out of at least one bill a month with the UK's first ever £9 tariff," said 3 sales and marketing manager Marc Allera. "The current economic climate means that we're more committed than ever to finding ways to pass savings to consumers."

All seems rather fair considering the timing and who knows, 18 months may just be long enough for sanity to return to the world...

Hmm I was a contract orange customer for 6 years, towards the end my bill was on average &#16350, even though i sent about 50 text messages and made about 100 mins of calls a month. I could never figure out the bills, exactly why they were so high.

I recently switched to asda mobile payg, will bill now averaging no more than &#16320 a month.

asda use vodafone, and the reception and customer service (based in scotland not india) is far better than orange.

Plus i use my iphone with asda and everything works a treat.

My advice, stick with payg if you want to save money, on contract they always manage to weasle it out of you.

I've been with 3 since shortly after their launch, they have always supplied superb value, the only bad thing with them is that the customer service is somewhere in Asia, and they're not very good at speaking English, but I guess you get what you pay for. I'm currently on a 3 Skypephone 6 month contract 300 mins for &#16315 a month and it is more than enough for me, I also got the same contract for my mum at the time and the deal was made even sweeter by being offered 3000 3 to 3 minutes for taking out two phones at the same time. 3 are one of the best value networks available, prior to 3 I'd been with Genie (O2) which were alright, and before that one of Hutchinson's (owners of 3) original networks Orange. They were brilliant for deals until Hutchinson sold them off, and now there too confusing with their animal packs (what has a Panther, Cheetah and Canary got to do with phones anyway, it's nearly as bad as calling a TV station Dave!)

Spot on! It doesn't seem to matter what tariff i'm on, or how many calls and texts I make every month - O2 always manage to eek out of me twice my &#16335 tariff cost!

There's always one spurious call or something that they find a way of charging &#16310+ for!

Usually I forget and call some 'customer service' number or a credit card number without thinking about it being an 0845 or 0875 or even an 0800 these days. After spending 20 minutes on hold and then getting put through to another continent and spending another 20 minutes explaining the situation, the phone bill's the last thing on my mind!

I'll dig that old CB radio out, that should do it :)

Good value? Virgin are doing 300 minutes and 300 texts for a tenner a month, sans contract.
