15 Inches Long; 0.9 Inches Thick

If you like thin and light notebooks but want something with a bigger screen, Asus has something for you.

With the launch of the V6800V, the company claims it has produced the world’s thinnest and lightest 15 inch laptop. It is just 0.9 inches thick and slips in at a proportionately bulimic 2Kg.

The V6800V doesn’t appear to be wanting for power either despite its waif-ish lines as it is based on the Sonoma edition of the ubiquitous Centrino chipset and therefore supports such recent notebook innovations as DDR2 RAM, PCI Express and SATA hard drives.

The fully customisable spec will feature processors beginning at 1.73GHz and hard drives at 60GB. At the top of the food chain you can crank up the clock past 2GHz and somehow Asus can squeeze in a 100GB hard drive (if you can afford the upgrade).

Another option available to potential V6800V owners will be the choice of either a 4-cell or 8-cell battery. The 4-cell is slimmer and provides a purported four hours of battery life while Asus brags that the 8-cell will last for up to eight hours (this is something we would really like to see first hand as it hits the magic length of a typical working day {although not in the TR labs I might add!}).

I have to admit the V6800V looks like a winner on paper and, in following so close behind the stylish W3000 Series, Asus looks to have a formidable new line up of notebooks on its hands. Sure, there is an element of Sony and Apple in these recent designs but who is going to complain about that? It's like saying:

Man One: "Your new Audi looks like an Aston Martin."
Man Two: "How dare you!"

Realistic? Nah, I don't think so... The V6800V is out now with a starting price £1,199 excluding VAT.
