Towards the end of March I ranted about how technology shows were often little more than a circle jerk between manufacturers more concerned about outdoing one another on a conceptual level than getting their technology out to the general public. Well Panasonic has just done a fantastic job of putting me in my place.
Incredibly it has just announced that the 103in 1080p plasma display we snapped at CEBIT will indeed make it to (super reinforced) shop shelves. To put this in some perspective 103 inches is over 8.5 feet (if you’re English), 2.61m (if you’re European), 2.86 yards if you’re very old and 0.01301 furlongs if you’re a horse. In fact, either way you measure it up, this is the world’s largest plasma TV – concept or otherwise.
It is a stunningly specified monolith too with a 3000:1 contrast ratio and 3.8’ pixel pitch. One gaping hole in all of this, however, comes from an unconfirmed report which suggests the screen takes an unbelievable 45 minutes to come on. Personally, I would suggest – even if that were true of the concept – I can’t imagine Panasonic shipping retail versions with the same shortcoming. I mean, can you imagine Steven Spielberg inviting Tom Hanks to his house to say “Hey Hanksy, take a look at what I just bought... Have a seat... In fact, grab a couple of power knaps while your there and then I’ll be right with you”.
Talking of overblown, overpaid Hollywood celebs brings me nicely to the price. There isn’t one yet and I am guessing that even with an anticipated December release date 99.999 per cent of the population still won’t have time to save up either. Don’t worry, a 103in High Definition set may have its plus points during the Siege of Gondor or epic tussles in Lawrence of Arabia but do you really want to see the more regular personas like Dale Winton, Trisha Goddard and Ainsley Harriet projected before you like Gods? Thought not…
