I take it this isn't a mobile PHONE tariff? I.e I couldn't buy, say, a Sim Free Palm Pre and then make calls and surf the net using it all for under a £5 a month, right? Because that would be amazing...

No its just data and limited data at that.

How would I go about checking how much data i've used this month on my normal broadband? Even with out downloads I reckon I would thrash well over 500mb in a week just surfing.

@Thomas - there are various bits of (probably free) software that you can download to monitor your data usage. I don't use one myself but I'm sure a quick Google will turn up some examples to try.

Your assumption isn't totally wrong - many people's surfing-only fits inside a 3GB-per-month cap - but if you're using mobile broadband people often do things to limit their data consumption, such as turn off text-only browsing etc

The real question for anyone considering this tariff: what is the cost if you exceed the cap? This can often blow your cost-savings right out of the water!

@The Evil Genius - You can get 500MB as a data add on for standard contracts with Orange, so you can still benefit from the same bundle on a phone tariff

The Early Bird is great. 5GB fair usage between midnight and 9AM each day, and it's only a 12 month contract.

The dongle comes with software which tells you your daily, weekly and monthly usage, too

Is it just me, or is "unlimited" but with a defined 5gb per month "fair use" just a 5gb cap?

I understand that this is to be used as modem, on a laptop, netbook or even desktop, and so we're talking proper web browsing, downloading the latest graphics card driver etc... 3.6Mbit is what I get on my landline broadband - i think I've got my Mbit and Mbytes right!

If so, then it'd be very easy it hit 5gb in a month. So easy, the "well it's just got a (very high) cap on it to stop people taking advantage" argument is pretty unrealistic in my view. I think Hox might be saying it's 5gb per day, and that's the sort of high limit I think reasonably counts as unlimited. Hitting 5gb each and every day really would be hitting it hard, but 5gb in a month??

Sorry to rant, but this stuff really annoys me. Must calm down. Maybe a complaint to the ASA and trading standards will do it....

Fair usage policies can be annoying, but don't confuse them with caps. I know people who regularly go over their FUP amount and to no detrimental long term effect. One key point to remember is that as it is advertised as unlimited, you cannot be charged for going over.

I think products like Early Bird are the way forward. A reasonable limit for peak usage hours, and the ability to rinse it off-peak on a daily basis.
