Subscriber to Virgin's 50Mbit cable service? Living close to your local fibre optic upgraded exchanged? Feeling pretty smug? Not anymore...
For while potential broadband speeds have skyrocketed in many parts of the UK and industry body Ofcom continues to push for even quicker evolution it seems we're all rather a long way behind, wait for it... Portugal!

Broadband TV News today reports that Portuguese cable network Zon Multimedia has announced plans for commercial deployment of a 1Gbps service - that's 1000Mbit per second. What is more all field tests for it have already been completed and a residential product will launch in September. It will form part of a two tier offering that also includes an entry level 200Mbit option. The move follows the launch of 50Mbit and 100Mbit Zon cable packages in January.
So next time you're thinking of the world's leading broadband nations, including the likes of Sweden, Japan, Korea and - yes - France, don't forget Portgual. It looks set to knock the socks off them all.
Over to you Virgin Media...

@wannaplay - I think someone needs to watch Monty Python's Life of Brian - it's a paraphrase of a famous line from that film (What have the Romans ever done for us?) :)
