The wireless router has become something of an institution in the modern home so could this indicate the rather artistic direction they may be headed...

A design project between TalkTalk and Goldsmiths, University of London, has unveiled an exhibition called 'Future Routers'. Its aim is to put an end to the usual tactic of hiding away routers and instead make them design pieces which can be proudly put in the open or have some practical secondary use.

Most logical are the Clock and Energy saver (the latter can also hold keys) while the Jelly Fish - admittedly completely bonkers - would no doubt appeal to students during various states of intoxication. Interestingly, though this is easily the most extravagant take on idea of router beautification the trio aren't the first attempts we've seen. Back in January D-Link announced the Xtreme N All-In-One which integrates a 3.2in LCD for displaying photos, so it's clearly on industry minds.

Importantly, these minds are spot on since, artist intentions aside, there is a practical side to all this experimentation. In short, keeping a router hidden away or under a desk greatly reduces its wireless performance. The more out in the open a router is, the wider and stronger the signal strength you'll receive around the home/office. In an age of ever faster broadband connections and increased High Definition streaming this is becoming ever more relevant.

Yep, there might be something here after all...

Nice ideas! Apart from the cabling, which as usual with pictures of any domestic electronic product don't appear in promotional pictures :-) .

@Mikey_uk well if Routers go in the direction of those linked in the article, then cables may well go the way of these: http://www.trustedreviews.com/home-cinema/news/2009/01/09/CE... more

Nice effect those keys are going to have on signal!

Apparently the design team didn't have an engineer on hand!

@Ryan - it'll make very little difference at all Ryan, certainly not compared to a router's usual place under a desk/down the back of a PC!
