Some argued that the arrival of Draft N wireless would make powerline largely irrelevant. Not if it's going this fast...

Leaping to a new high this week is Belkin which has announced the 'Gigabit Powerline HD Starter Kit' which - you guessed it - ramps up powerline to Gigabit speeds of up to 1000Mbps. This is a remarkable 5x faster than 200Mbps solutions we have seen from the majority of manufacturers to date.

Naturally Belkin promotes Powerline HD as ideal for streaming home entertainment around the house, including games, high definition movies and audio but I'd say the real bonus here could be for NAS. Simply put, you can store your NAS box anywhere in the house (they can get noisy with multiple hard drives inside) and still maintain rocket sled performance.

A quick powerline 101 for those scratching their heads:

  • Plug one adapter into your router/modem and also into an available wall socket
  • Plug the other adaptor in another wall socket elsewhere in your home/office and into any device with an available Ethernet port (RJ45) such as a games console, set-top box, computer, etc
It's that easy. One gripe: drop the 'HD' - people are confused enough.

The Belkin Gigabit Powerline HD Starter Kit goes on sale immediately in the US for $149.99 (£107) and will hit Europe in early August. Yep, powerline just got sexy again...
