Virgin Media has its critics - many of them fully justified - but one area it can't be faulted is raw speed...

Following the unveiling of BT's first 40Mbit exchanges yesterday, the lightening quick cable broadband provider has taken great pleasure in reaffirming its own ballistic roadmap.

Having already had a 50Mbit package since December, Virgin CEO Neil Berkett explained: "As we work with application providers, and content providers... there will be a natural point where we upgrade from 10, 20 and 50Mbit to something more. If BT were to meet the time frame they have suggested - of finishing by 2012 - I would see us as having much, much faster upstream speed, running at a minimum of 100Mbps downstream and possibly more. You can see a real opportunity there."

Irony is, this chest puffing is actually below the 200Mbit 2012 target Virgin CTO Howard Watson promoted midway through last year. That said, Berkett confirmed its network could run at up to 150Mbit now (the theoretical maximum of the infrastructure is 200Mbit) but that Virgin doesn't yet see significant returns for such products. He did admit however that he expects a product faster than its 50Mbit offering to appear in 2010.

DSL, Cable, LTE - who will win? I suspect LTE eventually, but either way it'll be fun finding out...
