Darn those lightening quick (if generally unreliable) cable networks... time for BT to play catch up again.

Following in the footsteps of Virgin's 50Mbit broadband December launch, British Telecom has announced which parts of the country will be able to receive comparable DSL speeds from early 2010.

29 exchanges are on the initial fibre upgrade list with a predictably heavy London influence while Manchester also does surprisingly well (full list below). Notably two non-urban locations will also benefit from day one: Calder Valley (near Halifax) and Taffs Well (near Cardiff) with approximately 500,000 homes and businesses hooked up nationwide. Speeds to these areas will bring up to 40Mbit downstream - and potentially 60Mbit, BT claims - while upload bandwidth could hit 10Mbit.

If you're feeling green with envy keep praying hard as BT admits it will announce further enabled exchanges before 2010 while up to 40 per cent of the populace should be on the list by 2012 as part of the company's £1.5bn fibre roll-out programme.

Conversely, if you are connected to one of these 29 exchanges and feeling pretty smug right now, just remember one thing: you pale into insignificance when compared with the 100Mbit trials bestowed on the lucky sods of Ebbsfleet...
