Quick one off topic while we're at CES as an interesting piece of news has just happened back in Blighty (yep, the world doesn't stop while the Vegas glitz occurs - for some reason). BT has just announced it is making those blood boiling 0870 and 0845 numbers free.

14m BT customers should be feeling the love from this with Anytime and Unlimited Evening and Weekend subscribers all benefiting. Personally I haven't found 0845 too annoying as it was charged at local rate (1p per minute), but 0870 is poison since not only is it charged at national rate (10ppm) but companies who use them take a slice of the cash too.

Things aren't all sunshine and roses however as other providers like Sky and TalkTalk will still be charging their customers for these numbers and 0844 and 0871 have become increasingly common and they are still left off the list. Obviously existing 0840 dial up numbers are exempt too (though why anyone would still use dial up in this day and age is beyond me).

All in all, it's a step in the right direction and one which gets the ball rolling while putting pressure on rival providers to do the same. Well done BT, just please shut up now until we get back - we're busy enough as it is!
