While it is true cable tends to represent the fastest broadband available (certainly downstream) it is also true that many live in areas which can't receive this service, so it's a good thing the company's DSL service is now getting up to speed as well...

Launching today with little fuss is a very welcome new Virgin DSL flagship service offering up to 16Mbit, a sizeable potential boost to its previous 8Mbit top end and it comes with a pretty tempting deal too.

In a sales tool I've yet to see utilised by other ISPs, Virgin will offer the 16Mbit upgrade to customers for free for the first three months - if they get the extra bump they're looking for the extra cost will be just £5pm at the end of this trial. If you're a long way from the exchange or simply find yourself not making use of this extra bandwidth on tap then it can be added or removed at any time without the need for a contract.

"We want everyone to be able to try fast broadband and experience the benefits firsthand, which is why we've created this double-speed broadband boost," said Virgin CCO Mark Schweitzer. "With fast broadband enabling customers to surf the web and download films, TV and music in no time at all, the internet (sic - it's capital 'I' it's a noun) is now better than ever, so we're confident this new enhancement will be a hit."

Usage models remain unknown as this stage but all in all, can't say fairer than that. Capitalisation issues aside...

Not sure why this is news; slower than the competition and it gets throttled anyway. The argument with downloading movies from the statement doesn't really fly: as soon as you... more
