Not content with buying Helio last month and setting up stall as America's only MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) the company has now revealed plans to burst into the UK mobile broadband sector too.

The news comes after successful contract negotiations between Virgin and its network host T-Mobile which sees their agreement renewed for another six years and enlarged to cater for such a move.

"We signed a contract amendment with them back in June to include the provision of HSDPA services," revealed a T-Mobile spokesperson. "We have a strong relationship with Virgin Mobile under a long-term contract."

No details of Virgin's service - let alone pricing - have been revealed at this stage but it is believed the first offerings will be ready in time for Christmas and be available on both contract and PAYG.

Perhaps most interesting however is whether this will signal the start of a rash of similar moves from existing MVNOs like Tesco, Ikea and the like. Seems likely to me...
