If you're one of the millions of DSL users out there currently scratching your head as to why your "up to" broadband connection speed is more "down to" then BT may have a solution: the 'iPlate'.

Apple-esque naming aide, the iPlate ('Interstitial Plate' in full - OK we forgive the abbreviation) is a wonderfully simple product which screws inbetween your master socket front cover and back plate and clears the line of excess noise and interference (you know, that job you continually ask BT to do which never gets done!).

Full effects can take a number of days to come through but the upside of a fully cleansed line is a potential speed boost in excess of 100 per cent with BT claiming seven out of 10 cats prefer it homes suffering from poor DSL speeds can benefit. Paramount to note however are routers must be plugged into the master socket to benefit (which may mean going into the 21st century wireless for some) and to remember it isn't a replacement for your ADSL filters - they all need to stay on.

Now we stress results will vary because line qualities vary, distances vary, exchange performance varies and, well... you get the picture. That said, BT claims a benchmark study of 36,000 lines showed that filtered lines typically had 20% fewer re-trains (denoting lost connections) and a 45% reduction in error rate and the early word from buyers is the iPlate is delivering in many cases.

Perhaps the best news about all this however is the iPlate retails for just £12.69 so the risk isn't large while the benefits could be huge. Be brave and see if this can fix your broadband woes... it's cheaper than moving house!
