While Virgin Media recently talked up 200Mbit cable by 2012 its proposed 50Mbit Service which has been trialling for more than a year still shows no sign of appearing. So could speed freaks be about to turn to DSL champion Be Unlimited instead?

The BPI bashing ISP has announced it will be testing its own scheme which could push connections up to 40Mbit - almost twice the theoretical maximum of its current 24Mbit flagship offering.

To hit these heights it will use a technology called 'ADSL2+ bonding' which involves combining two telephone lines via a single ADSL2+ router. Yes, it's a little like the bridging ISDN technology of dial-up systems before broadband of days gone by and - if successful - ADSL2+ Bonding will likely play a similar role while we wait for the benefits of a nationwide Fibre Optic roll-out.

Want to get involved Be customers? Here's the skinny:

If the sound of getting up to 40meg excites you then here’s what you need to do:

  • Contact Be on 0207 479 5029 by Friday 26 September 2008 at the latest to book your place on the trial.
  • Once you’re confirmed on the trial we’ll even contact BT to order your 2 new telephone lines (incoming calls only) so you don’t have to.
  • And finally meet us in a pub near our offices to get your new free router. Meeting venue and details will follow once you’ve contacted us to be part of the trial. For further information on this trial please contact Be by e-mail at: linebondingtrial@beunlimited.co.uk
In a pub! We love these crazy guys!

Of course the downside is two BT lines meaning double the line rental rates, but it could be a small price to pay for the potential bandwidth on offer. As always distance from the exchange will play a major part no-one won anything by being a wussy.

Go on, hit up that email!

Update: We've had this pointed out by a few readers and now it has been confirmed to us officially so sorry to burst a few bubbles but:

  • The trial is currently limited to current Be customers who are on the Paddington exchange In addition there is a cap on the number of participants that will be accepted of somewhere
  • between 20 and 30
