Vodafone is famed for its comprehensive network coverage and often lambasted for its pricing, but when it comes to mobile broadband it is now looking to be the king of both...

Showing its concern for its entry-level customers the telco has announced it has slashed with immediate effect the cost of its fantastic USB Modem Stick (a rare TR Editor's Choice Award winner) by a massive 50 per cent for all users on 30 day contracts. In real terms this means the price drops from £99 to just £49 and echoes a similar move by 3 early last month.

Given that Vodafone also recently cut £10pm from its 18 month tariffs (on which USB modems are free) and you can see that the mobile broadband market is fast reaching boiling point. Of course 3 also reduced its contract plans by 50 per cent but Vodafone can rightly point to the fact that its network peaks at a maximum of up to 7.2Mbit with wider coverage, while 3 is limited to 3.6Mbit in the most developed parts of its network and 1.8Mbit elsewhere.

Swings and roundabouts? Possibly. But this is one tough playground where T-Mobile and O2 and Orange in particular must feel like they've just had sand kicked in their eyes...
