If you want the UK's fastest broadband package you should live in... Bournemouth?! The seaside town has been chosen as the first place to receive a revolutionary fibre cable Internet infrastructure installed - of all places - in its sewers.

Work will begin over the next six months via specialist firm H20 and when you think about it, it makes a lot of sense: pre-established tunnels under the entire town (goodbye roadworks, hello time and financial savings) and rugged, waterproof casings.

Once complete 88,000 homes in the area will be able to receive speeds of up to a lightening 100Mbit (around 10MB per second) connecions - roughly five times faster than the country's current speed kings, Virgin's cable broadband and Be Unlimited's ADSL2+ services (the latter only when located close to an exchange).

"Many households and broadband customers in the UK have insufficient connectivity bandwidths because they are attached to legacy networks deployed in the 20th century," commented H20 chief executive Elfed Thomas speaking to the BBC. Should the initiative prove successful (and there seems no reason why it shouldn't) plans will be made to roll it out on a larger basis.

Of course BT has already talked up its 100Mbit service but this isn't likely to appear for many years yet and with 360,000 miles of existing sewer work H20 has half the (stinky) job already done for it.

Web 2.0 and sewers sharing content, actually - that's not such a stretch...
