There may be a massive brouhaha over real world broadband speeds right now, but at least ADSL2+ availability is improving...

To this end Be Unlimited has made the welcome announcement that over the next four months it has ambitious plans to increase its nationwide 24Mbit coverage by a massive 15 per cent. This translates to a further two million lines and represents 67 per cent of the UK population. 400 exchanges will also be unbundled as part of the process bringing Be's total to 1,245 - the largest in the country.

Perhaps just as importantly, Be also says it is "already testing new technologies that will enhance not only the network but our speed". Given the large number of variables (line noise, distance from the exchange, numbers of users, peak times, etc) anything that can squeeze out greater zip will be highly welcome.

Prices will remain unchanged following the roll-out with charges starting at just £14pm for an 8Mbit connection with 1.3Mbit upload, rising to £24pm for a 24Mbit line and potential 2.5Mbit upload with unlimited download allowance.

So if you've been longing for better download speeds keep your eyes peeled on Be's availability checker over the next few months...
